Developing a new concept hospital

Northumbria NHS Healthcare Foundation Trust responded to research indicating that seeing the right specialist in an emergency has a marked effect on recovery, by developing a new specialist hospital.

The new Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington, near Newcastle upon Tyne, focuses on the provision of emergency care and includes radiology, theatres, critical care and maternity departments, supported by central blood, sciences and pathology.

The 30,000sq m hospital building represents a step forward in emergency medicine, being the first purpose-built hospital with emergency care consultants on duty 24/7. It was an honour for Titan Door Systems to have been involved in a project of this nature.

  • S-XR18-BR2 external door range (CE marked under BS EN 14351-1 and certified under STS202 and Secured by Design)S-IR Internal Fire Rated Doorsets (certified under Certifire accreditation scheme)

Working within the building parameters

The state of the art facility required high-performance doorsets that could offer suitable fire rating certifications to meet the safety needs of the building.

Due to its conceptual nature, the three-floor layout of the new hospital includes aspects like “tree and branch” layouts to allow all beds to be visible for nurse stations, as well as curved walls to create a calm and modern aesthetic.

Installation within this layout was a particular challenge, especially when combined with the unusual construction technique that utilised high levels of insulation and few flat surfaces. However, Titan have a team of highly-qualified and FIRAS accredited installers, and the challenging building was no match for their skills.

Installation is a crucial factor in maintaining the performance and certification of all fire rated doors, so getting it right was a real priority for our teams.

Researching and developing bespoke counter screens

Many of our projects include some bespoke elements - features that the end user will want or need to be included in the design. On occasion, these individual requirements stray into new areas for Titan Doors, and we always enjoy conducting the research and development needed to meet these challenges.

In the case of the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, the Trust wanted to include glazed counter security screens. In order to fulfil this requirement, we investigated a range of secure glass types, in order to identify a suitable proposal that would satisfy the Trust’s security consultant. These screens were installed along with the rest of the doors within this project.
